Jumba La Mtwana Site

Description

These Swahili ruins, just north of the Mtwapa Creek, have as much archeological magnificence as the more famous Gide ruins. Jumba la Mtwana means 'Big House of Slaves and locals believe the town was an important slave port in the 14th or 15th century. There is a small museum of Swahili culture and an excellent seaside restaurant, and the custodian gives great tours for a small fee. The ruins are down a 3 km access road, turn right immediately after the Mtwapa Weigh Bridge.
